\\ Listen to Jordan Rakei’s new single ‘Nerve’

From the upcoming album Wallflower due to be released via Ninja Tune on 22 September, Jordan Rakei drops new tune Nerve.

Nerve follows Sorceress, the first taste of Jordan Rakei’s second full length album. The track mirrors Rakei’s neo-soul and jazz influences, comparable to the aloof musings of Nick Hakim or the production of his contemporary Tom Misch. Following a string of EPs and his 2016 album Cloak, as well as support from Bradley Zero, NAO and Loyle Carner, Jordan Rakei is primed to build his wildly loyal fanbase even more.

Nerve came together with help from The Invisible frontman Dave Okumu who lays down a warm guitar lick on the track, which also balances strings with soft organ chords and layered vocals. It’s a sound that Rakei is quickly distinguishing as his own. The hooky tune also reminds of his talent not just as a vocalist or multi-instrumentalist; he’s produced every track on the album.

On Nerve, Rakei’s words ‘How can I find the reason to love you when I don’t love myself’, plays on both senses of the word ‘refrain’: this repeated line acts to break a spiral of decline through profound self-awareness. In contrast, this time to his previous single Sorceress, Jordan adopts a more objective approach with conviction, exposing flaws and insecurities to find resolution within himself.  Although still carrying feelings of bitterness, Nerve reflects a regained sense of agency and energy.

Catch Jordan Rakei on his debut tour of the US starting in September, or in Europe this October.
