\\ Six Jazz tracks to get you through January
January is a wonderful time of year; your feet are getting tickled by raindrops, your liver is repairing itself after heavy Christmas drinking, and the excess body fat you’re carrying from eating all those lovely chocolates is keeping you warm. Wait – we’re soggy, tired and chubby. Screw it, January is for hibernating in jogging bottoms with the lights dimmed and doing sweet FA until the world becomes a bit more bearable. Here are six (sort of) jazz tunes to soundtrack your January evenings.
Alice Coltrane \\ Turiya And Ramakrishna
You can almost hear Santa’s sleigh bells trickle away in Turiya And Ramakrishna. Alice Coltrane was a pioneering Goddess of spiritual jazz; January 2017 marks ten years since her passing. The pianist, harpist and singer writes music for contemplation; we can’t imagine a dreamier way to spend eight minutes then to float to this tune.
Ella Fitzgerald \\ Misty
Cold Winter evenings are about revelling in feeling helplessly apathetic and browsing online for reduced SAD lamps. Valentine’s Day is next month and there’s a good chance you’re getting repetitive strain from flicking right too much. If you can’t find romance on Tinder, listening to some of the classic female vocals of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday or Sarah Vaughan will at least romanticise your evening into something resembling a chick-flick montage.
Talos ft Poppy Ajudha \\ Oh Girl
London producer Talos reveals collabs with Nubya Garcia and Poppy Ajudha on his Lowlight EP released late in 2016. In short, he’s teaming up with some of the best rising talent in the city. His beats are luscious, reedy and worthy of the repeat button. Listen to this and more new music in our latest Mixcloud show.
Becca Stevens \\ Thinkin Bout You
Brooklyn vocalist Becca Stevens is a serial collaborator (Snarky Puppy, Jacob Collier, Ambrose Akinmusire) and one of the few artists who has successfully straddled the line between jazz and pop. Her version of Frank Ocean‘s Thinkin Bout You will make you go “Huh?”,”Oooh” then “Mmm”. Becca Stevens’ new project Regina – an alias inspired by royalty – drops later this year on GroupUP Music.
NK – OK X Blue Lab Beats Remix \\ Warpaint
Blue Lab Beats appeared suddenly and frequently in the second half of 2016; the duo released their debut EP, a short documentary on Dazed and Confused and impressed crowds when as support for Theo Croker during London Jazz Festival. Through the lens of drum pads and synth pedals, Blue Lab Beats have reinterpreted classical band Paradisia‘s Warpaint. Lounge vibes. Look out for a follow up EP to Blue Lab Beats’ debut later this year.
Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers \\ Doodlin’
Horace Silver is a pianist’s pianist. In fact, he’s generally a musician’s pianist if our Mixcloud interviews are anything to go by, with several of our guests citing Silver as one of their favourite jazz artists. Recorded in 1954 with Kenny Dorham on trumpet and Art Blakey on drums, Doodlin’ is a warm squeeze.
