Interview \\ Three minutes with Blue Lab Beats

Blue Lab Beats headline Jazz Standard x QM Records Alternative Escape showcase on Thursday 18 May. Get familiar with the London two piece; you’re going to hear a more from them.

\\ ‘Freedom’ is on its way – tell us a bit about what to expect from it.

This new EP – which is out 16 June  – is called Freedom and you can expect two rap vocalists on this one. Kojey Radical and Louis V1 feature on two of the tracks plus vocals from Tiana Major9. The first track from the EP, Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye, has just been released, featuring Tiana and Kojey. Another track from the EP was released a few months ago called Keep Moving, that featured Nubya Garcia on sax.

\\ You started in your bedrooms, and now you’ve just finished working in Real World Studios – what are your favourite conditions for writing and recording?

Somewhere that you can’t hear the outside world; the only sound at Real World was the sound of a swan which came to visit us and pecked at the window! Having the best team of musicians around us, engineers that understand our sound and having a Fender Rhodes is a studio makes everything better.

\\ You played recently with Malatu Astatke; what was the vibe?

He said he loved our work which was a massive compliment. Hearing his arrangements live was very very inspiring!

\\ Despite being in early days you’ve been travelling for shows quite a bit already, right?

We really enjoyed playing at Biko Club in Milan and Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. We’re looking forward playing Glastonbury Festival, WOMAD and would love to play NYC.

\\ Which albums are on your playlists at the moment?

Kendrick Lamar‘s Damn, Nubya Garcia’s Nubya’s 5iveJoey Bada$$‘ All Amerikkan Bada$$, Ezra Collective‘s Chapter Seven and Louis VI‘s Lonely Road of the Dreamer
